Maritime archaeology is one of the fastest developing and dynamic fi elds in the wider discipline. This course aims to provide graduates in archaeology or related subjects with a thorough grounding in the theory and practice of archaeology applied in marine, riverine and lacustrine environments and their associated landscapes.
This MA/MSc provides a thorough grounding in the theory and practice of maritime archaeology. Submerged landscapes, maritime cultures and shipwrecks are investigated, and the whole coastal zone is acknowledged as a priority for protection, management and research.
The programme includes six taught units and a dissertation. Two core units are normally compulsory and cover the theory and methodology of maritime archaeology. The first, Maritime Aspects of Culture, is more thematic and deals with the development and scope of the subject, current research, theoretical perspectives and central issues. The second, Archaeology Underwater, focuses on the practical application of archaeological principles in underwater environments and associated skills.
