This programme is intended for those with a first degree in social or cultural anthropology who wish to use visual media in the course of pursuing doctoral research. Those enrolled on this programme are expected to carry out an original research project in the course of a minimum 12 month period of fieldwork.
The normal maximum duration of the programme is four years, although if students intend to make a film or engage in other visual media work during their fieldwork, they may be granted an additional six months, as are those who have to learn a difficult language.
This programme is delivered in conjunction with the Granada Centre for Visual Anthropology
Many of their PhD graduates pursue academic careers. Others have gone on to work in development, NGOs, public services or the private sector. A number of those who obtained a PhD with Visual Media work in film or TV.
Academic entry qualification overview:
UK Masters degree (or overseas equivalent) in social and/or visual anthropology, or a related field as well as the necessary film making competences.

Applicants with scores below their requirements may be eligible to attend one of their pre-sessional English courses. Duration will be confirmed when an official result has been received.
Exemption to the requirements is at the discretion of the School. Applicants who have been taught and assessed in English on previous degrees may still be required to show proof of English proficiency via TOEFL/IELTS.
