Course description
BA (Hons) in Ancient History and Archaeology is a joint degree which combines two disciplines and provides students with a knowledge of two complementary approaches to the past. Students are provided with training in essential historical skills and given a broad background to the classical history of the Mediterranean World (including Greek and Roman history, theory and methodology) and a global view of archaeology (Old and New World from the Neolithic to the post-Medieval period, as well as theory and practice of archaeology). Throughout the entire degree you can choose to follow a pathway that emphasises either archaeology (including fieldwork) or ancient history and languages.
Course aims
The course aims to:
- develop and encourage students' interest in the past
- train students in the critical study of historical documents and the techniques and methods of archaeology
- provide a broadly-based and challenging curriculum including course units that are innovative and stimulating, draw upon the research expertise of the teaching staff, and are examined by a range of methods of assessment
- introduce students, within the context of specific historical and archaeological courses, to a variety of theoretical approaches and methodologies
- help students to work independently and to organise effectively their own schedules of personal study
- produce graduates with the transferable skills necessary to equip them for employment, postgraduate study, or further training.
Career opportunities
Their graduates can, through the academic and practical skills imparted, pursue a career in many different areas of archaeology, history, museums, and cultural resource management. Ancient History and Archaeology also provides a basic Humanities degree which can be employed in a wide variety of career prospects such as writing, journalism, research and consultancy work.
