Building engineers are concerned with all activities involved in the creation and maintenance of the built environment. The main emphasis of their role is the technology of building, though specialisms enable them to focus on building design or the managerial aspects of the production and maintenance processes. Many building engineers also specialise in fire safety engineering. Their expertise includes a detailed understanding of the statutory control of building work.
This course is designed to give you a well-rounded but technologically based education in many aspects of the built environment.
All construction courses share a common Credit Level 4. This provides a common knowledge base through which basic principles are inculcated. It also promotes the interdisciplinary nature of the modern construction industry. You will study construction technology, building services, environmental and materials science, design, surveying, law, and communication. At Credit Levels 5 and 6 you focus on subjects specific to your specialism, whilst still retaining some common themes amongst the Construction programme. Construction technology and management remain central to the programme but there is increased emphasis on specialisms such as finance, contract administration, structural design, and professional practice. Throughout the course the central issue of health and safety is addressed and the importance of sustainability is considered. You also have the option of spending a year in professional practice or industry on the full-time course.
You could work in a wide range of different organisations, including local authorities, contractors, consultancies and commercial companies.
