BA Art History and Italian: University of Sussex

About the programme

This degree allows you to study art history and to become proficient in another European language. It enables you to develop your understanding of visual cultures in different periods and places, and provides direct engagement with objects in their original settings.

Acquiring a knowledge of visual and linguistic culture allows a fuller understanding of the texts, images and objects you study.

You take art history core courses in the first two years and specialise in your final year. You also have tuition in your chosen European language and take courses on European culture and society. The additional Year 2 course in Text and Image is designed to provide a bridge between the different subjects.

You spend Year 3 studying at a European university before returning to Sussex for your final year.

Admission requirments

A level

• Typical offer: In the range ABB-BBB
• Specific entry requirements: A level (or equivalent) Italian, at grade B

International Baccalaureate

• Typical offer range: 32 to 34 points overall, including at least 5 in Higher Level Italian

English language requirements

• IELTS 6.5 overall and not less than 6.0 in both the Listening and Writing sections.
• Internet-based TOEFL with 90 overall, including at least 24 in Speaking and 25 in Writing.
• The University also accepts a range of other qualifications:
  • GCSE or IGCSE English as a first language: grade C.
  • GCSE English or IGCSE as a second language: grade B.
  • Cambridge Advanced Certificate in English (CAE): grade B.
  • Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE): grade C.
  • Cambridge English Language 1119: between grades 1 and 6.
