Microbiology is the study of the biology of bacteria, viruses, protozoa and fungi. An understanding of these organisms has important implications for human health and disease and economic issues.
The Microbiology course in Manchester is one of the few that include virology courses at the undergraduate level. There are many new employment opportunities in the rapidly expanding field of Microbiology, an area that is vitally important to our health and economic welfare.
During the final year, advanced courses are chosen from an extensive list, the most popular are currently Molecular Virology, Medical Virology, Bacterial Diseases of Man, and Microbial Biotechnology.
A microbiology degree will lead to a range of careers. Every year a number of students go on to study for either a PhD or an MSc in a wide number of microbiology related disciplines. They may choose a career as a research scientist in the pharmaceutical, food, water or biotechnology industries. In the health service students may train to be a clinical research scientist or work in the hospital diagnostic service. Many other job options are possible as many companies employ their own microbiologist. Also, students may undertake a PGCE to lead onto a career in teaching.
