The European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI) is an Outstation of the EMBL (European Molecular Biology Laboratory) in Heidelberg, and is responsible, with its international collaborators, for the major databases of nucleic acids and protein sequences and structures. They are a major site for research in the field of bioinformatics, especially in genome research, expression data and structural biology.

Key research areas

We offer research opportunities for PhD students in the following areas of bioinformatics:

  • genome analysis and comparative genomics
  • human variation data
  • analysis of molecular evolution
  • systems biology
  • protein structure and function
  • modeling of regulatory systems
  • analysis of DNA microarray data for expression, genotyping and protein-DNA interactions
  • analysis of high throughput biomolecular data
  • statistics and mathematical modelling
  • functional genomics of differentiation and development
  • computational neurobiology
  • cell-based assays and genetic interaction screens
  • biological image analysis
  • development of database interfaces
  • information technology for genomics
  • bioinformatics literature and data mining and ontological design

Research collaborations

They have particularly close contacts with many European academic and industrial groups.
