The Wellcome Trust/Cancer Research UK Institute opened in 1991 for research into the cell and molecular biology of cancer and developmental processes. The Institute contains 16 independent groups funded by either The Wellcome Trust or Cancer Research UK, all located in one building designed to promote as much interaction as possible.

Key research areas

  • Cell polarity and chromatin regulation in C. elegans (Dr Julie Ahringer)
  • Embryonic nervous system development: stem cells to synapses (Prof Andrea Brand)
  • The molecular analysis of Drosophila morphogenesis (Dr Nick Brown)
  • Mechanisms of nuclear reprogramming (Prof John Gurdon)
  • DNA repair and DNA damage signalling (Prof Steve Jackson)
  • Chromatin regulation and cancer (Prof Tony Kouzarides)
  • Neocortical stem and progenitor cell biology (Dr Rick Livesey)
  • Mouse primordial germ cells and stem cells (Dr Anne McLaren)
  • Molecular mechanism of cytokinesis in C. elegans and mammals (Dr Masanori Mishima)
  • Control of gene expression through small RNAs in C. elegans and mammals (Dr Eric Miska)
  • Regulation of mitosis in mammalian cells (Dr Jon Pines)
  • Molecular analysis of the Drosophila centrosome (Dr Jordan Raff)
  • mRNA localisation and the origin of polarity in Drosophila (Prof Daniel St Johnston)
  • Mesoderm formation in vertebrate embryos (Prof Jim Smith)
  • Germ line, stem cells and epigenetic reprogramming (Prof Azim Surani)
  • Development of polarity and early patterning in the mouse embryo (Dr Magdalena Zernicka-Goetz)
