Course description

The Enterprise Doctorate (EntD) is a doctorate in business creation and knowledge transfer and was modeled on the engineering doctorate. It addresses the 'innovation exploitation barrier' highlighted by Sir Gareth Roberts.

The EntD programme is designed to prepare individuals for work at the forefront of knowledge, transferring that knowledge into the marketplace in the form of high added-value goods and services. To achieve this, the course develops:

  • Research skills at doctoral level
  • Advanced understanding of a specialist area and the ability through research to partake in the further advancement of it
  • Advanced understanding of enterprise and its role as a key economic driver
  • The ability to evaluate innovation in the context of knowledge transfer and business creation
  • The confidence and ability to manage an entrepreneurial business or project, growing it from initiation to a viable and commercial entity
  • Generic transferable skills in enterprise, leadership, team building, negotiation, networking and transformational management.

The EntD achieves these objectives by exposing candidates to three principal streams of activity:

  • Research work on a knowledge-based problem with commercial potential
  • A structured programme of enterprise teaching
  • An exercise in business creation and knowledge transfer combining the research and enterprise streams in a business creation exercise, in which the outcome of the research is developed and tested in the market.

Students are enrolled in the School from where the research supervisor is assigned.  The Manchester Enterprise Centre will, however, be responsible for the day-to-day activities of a candidate's studies.
