Today’s business is increasingly international in scope. There are advantages in combining knowledge of modern business with the experience of another culture. This programme will appeal to students who are considering a future career in international management, but who do not wish to study a language to degree level.

First year

This year lays the foundation for the study of business management. You study the same programme as students on the BSc Business Management.

Second and fourth years

In these years you begin to have some choice within the themed structure of the programme. The modules offered will change from time to time, as they are developed to reflect the ever-changing world of business. During the second year you also prepare for your study abroad.

Third year

This year enables you to improve your understanding of the cultural context of business management in another country. You spend the year studying at one of our partner universities, such as: Cornell University or Marymount Manhattan (New York) in the USA; Tec de Monterray, Guadalajara in Mexico; Hong Kong University; the University of West Bohemia in the Czech Republic; the University of Toronto in Canada; the University of Melbourne in Australia; or the University of Auckland in New Zealand. You can also go on an exchange through the Universitas 21 programme (a list of partners is available at www.universitas21.com ).

European exchanges are part of the EU’s Erasmus programme and you will be eligible for a small EU grant. For students who take a Universitas 21 place, there is the possibility of a University bursary.

Your year abroad is taught in English, although you may benefit from the opportunity to learn your host country’s language. It may also be possible to undertake a work-based placement.

Teaching and assessment

In addition to formal lectures there are small group classes, individual and group exercises and presentations. Assessment is by a mixture of written examinations, essays and project work.

Career opportunities

As this degree gives a more specialised understanding of aspects of international business, it is suited to students who are seeking employment in a multinational enterprise. Recent research has shown that companies value students who have lived and worked within another culture; as business becomes increasingly international, they need graduates who can work abroad on long or short placements and who can interact effectively with their overseas customers and suppliers.

Additional information

The year abroad is conditional upon an acceptable level of performance in your first-year examinations. If you do not achieve this, you will be transferred to the BSc Business Management
