The major Biochemistry and Cell Biology at Jacobs University Bremen focuses on understanding and exploring the molecular mechanisms of cellular functions, and thus of life. During their first year at Jacobs University, students aiming to Major in Biochemistry and Cell Biology are introduced to these fields through a comprehensive lecture and a corresponding laboratory course. In addition, students are free to choose other related courses that may help them to specialise later on in their studies or maybe those simply of interest. The second year of studies focuses on deepening knowledge and skills in the fields of Biochemistry and Cell Biology. More time is spent in the laboratory, where knowledge is put to the test. A required professional research internship at the end of this year gives students insight into the work of a company or scientist in this field of study. Third year Biochemistry and Cell Biology students begin to acquire knowledge in specialised fields such as immunology, genetics or analytical biochemistry and have the opportunity to begin independent research in the lab. This will aid in deciding where and in which specific field the student wishes to pursue a career.
