The Chemistry major at Jacobs University has been designed according to the most recent Chemistry Euro-Bachelor guidelines as well as the recommendations of the American Chemical Society. Following a broad natural science and mathematics education in the first year with complementary lab modules, the second year of chemistry education focuses on the core disciplines of organic, inorganic and physical chemistry with two integrated lab courses. Guided research in the laboratories of the professors, current literature surveys, and research seminars are mandatory in the third year (two to three days per week), and culminate in the writing of a B.Sc. thesis. For highly motivated students independent laboratory work is encouraged and made possible earlier than the third year of study. In addition, students can freely select up to 8 specialisation courses of their interest, including biochemistry, biophysical chemistry, geochemistry, and chemical physics. Importantly, our undergraduate major is synergistic with the graduate programme "Nanomolecular Science" at Jacobs University. The Chemistry major therefore combines the exciting core education of chemistry with the foundations and concepts of modern nanoscience and the special skills of advanced technologies from chemical engineering. The degree allows theoretically and practically talented students to compete for graduate schools and industrial careers in the core areas of chemistry, chemical engineering, and nanoscience/technology, including such key areas as biotechnology, computational chemistry, supramolecular chemistry, drug discovery, and catalysis. In addition, the major is suitable for students with interest in medicine, because the course requirements of American medical schools (pre-med) can be met within the first two years of Chemistry study.
