Course description
Chemistry with Forensic & Analytical Chemistry offers you a four year MChem degree. The Forensic/Analytical component of the programme will comprise introductory theory and practical units, introduction to the English Legal System and a course in Maths and statistics as applied to Forensic/Analytical work. You also attend courses covering presentational, computer, and IT skills.
The Forensic/Analytical part of the programme will focus on analytical techniques and instrumentation applied in the context of Forensic work as well as units on Forensic Pharmacy. Eligibility for continuation on this MChem programme is at our discretion, based on your general performance and your second year mark. If you are not eligible you will be transferred to the BSc programme.

MChem Chemistry with Forensic & Analytical Chemistry graduates go into a wide range of careers. You will be numerate, literate, versatile, creative and skilled in problem solving. You will be a strong contender for jobs in forensic science (although competition is tough here). Your core chemistry degree would make you eligible for most chemistry related jobs, but you would be particularly well suited to pursue a range of careers in analysis, which is the largest area of chemical employment.
Entry requirements
- A Level: Grades ABB-ABC (to include Chemistry plus one other science or maths subject).
- English language: Minimum grade C in GCSE English Language. IELTS - minimum 6.5. TOEFL - minimum 233 (computer-based) or 577 (paper-based) or 90 (internet-based).
- AS level: Two AS Levels may be accepted in place of one A Level.
- Unit grade information: The University of Manchester welcomes the provision of unit grade information which, like all other available information, will inform the consideration of applications.
- GCSE: A good range of subjects including English, Maths and Sciences with minimum grades of A-C.
- Key Skills qualification: The University warmly welcomes applications from students studying the Key Skills qualification.
- International Baccalaureate: 33 points overall with at least 17 at Higher Level including Chemistry plus at least one other science subject from Maths, Physics or Biology at Higher Level. English must be offered at standard level.
