Course description
This four-year MChem programme is for you if you want to gain a knowledge of law, especially in relation to patents and intellectual property rights, together with a professional training in chemistry. In addition to traditional chemistry topics, you take course units such as contract and company law, intellectual property law and European law in the School of Law.
In your third year you study core chemistry and you can choose from a range of courses covering Inorganic Chemistry, Organic Chemistry and Physical Chemistry. Practical work in the third year takes the form of a team-working project. In the School of Law you will study Intellectual Property Law.
In the fourth and final year, you carry out an extended individual project associated with one of the research groups in the School of Chemistry. You take advanced chemistry units and attend specialist lectures chosen in consultation with your project supervisor. In Law you will study Competition Law and undertake a Patent Law project, mentored by a patent professional in Industry or Private Practice.
Career opportunities
You will be numerate, literate, versatile, creative and skilled in problem solving, with specialist knowledge in Patent Law. Around 50% of graduates have a first job directly using their chemical knowledge, 25% go on to a further degree and the remaining 25% opt for diverse careers in finance, management, computing and IT.
Entry requirements
- Academic entry qualification overview: A Level: Grades ABB-ABC (to include Chemistry plus one other science or maths subject).
- English language: Minimum grade C in GCSE English Language. IELTS - minimum 6.5. TOEFL - minimum 233 (computer-based) or 577 (paper-based) or 90 (internet-based).
- A level: Grades ABB including Chemistry and one other science or maths subject.
- AS level: Two AS Levels may be accepted in place of one A Level.
- Unit grade information: The University of Manchester welcomes the provision of unit grade information which, like all other available information, will inform the consideration of applications.
- GCSE: A good range of subjects including English, Maths and Sciences with minimum grades of A-C.
- Key Skills qualification: The University warmly welcomes applications from students studying the Key Skills qualification.
- International Baccalaureate: 33 points overall with at least 17 at Higher Level including Chemistry plus at least one other science subject from Maths, Physics or Biology at Higher Level. English must be offered at standard level.
