The University of Cambridge has been a centre of excellence for research in the theory and properties of polymeric materials for a considerable time.

The interdisciplinary Melville Laboratory was set up in 1990 with industrial sponsorship and is now a thriving research unit housed in the Chemistry Department. It exists to provide excellence in innovative polymer synthesis.

Key research areas

  • Liquid crystalline polymers
  • Dendrimers
  • Polymer light-emitting diodes
  • New methods of polymer synthesis
  • Living polymerisations
  • Nanotechnology
  • Soft lithography and self-assembled monolayers
  • Polymer brushes
  • Nanostructured polymers

Research collaborations

They support interdisciplinary collaborations with the Departments of Chemistry, Physics, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Engineering and Biotechnology, and the IRC in Nanotechnology.
