About the programme

The programmes contain a large proportion of laboratory and practical work to reinforce the theories and practices learnt in the classroom with 'hands on' experience developed through field courses. The programmes also provide an opportunity to study the fundamental knowledge and theories required by all Civil Engineers and apply these to the practical work environment.

Career opportunities

There is a skills shortage in the profession and opportunities are available in civil, structural or water engineering, geotechnics, IT or transportation. The diverse range of subjects studied on this programme provide graduates with a wealth of transferable skills and many graduates have successfully moved to careers in business, management, and finance.

Admission requirments

All applicants MUST have attained a minimum standard of GCSE grade C in English Language and Mathematics or their equivalents. In the case of applicants whose first language is not English, then IELTS 6.0 (or equivalent) is required. International qualifications will be checked for appropriate matriculation to UK Higher Education undergraduate programmes.

Entry requirements will normally be either:

  1. A relevant A2 level course of study, i.e. mathematics and science, preferably physics but with insufficient tariff points for entry to Year 1. A minimum of 120 UCAS tariff points is required.
  2. Successful completion of an 'A' level course of study, but not in the normally accepted subjects subject areas. A minimum of 120 UCAS tariff points is required.
  3. Equivalent qualifications to (i) or (ii) above e.g. BTEC/EDEXEL, CITEVEC, Scottish Highers, appropriate Access course courses NVQ(Advanced) etc. but again with insufficient points for entry to year 1 or not in the normally accepted subjects subject areas.

Students with other qualifications and/or work experience who can demonstrate that they can benefit from and have the potential to succeed on the programme course will be considered on an individual basis.

Students may join Year 0 at the start of semester B if they can provide satisfactory evidence that they have previously achieved the learning outcomes of semester A.
