Course overview

The degree course MEng Civil Engineering with a Year in Industry consists of two initial years at university, followed by a year in industry and two final years at university.

They have strong links with major civil engineering companies, and the year in industry provides valuable experience which is also accredited as employment training for membership of the ICE and IStructE. Work experience is regarded very positively by employers seeking to employ graduates, and would therefore strengthen your CV on graduation.

You are also free to make your own arrangements for a year out for work experience during the degree course. This is most commonly between the second and third years of a BEng course, or between the second and third or third and fourth years of an MEng degree.

Alternatively, you may wish to spend a year in industry between leaving college/school and starting your University course. They generally encourage this also, through the Year in Industry scheme. They also encourage students wishing to undertake other constructive forms of personal development prior to starting their University course.

10-week periods in the industry

Finally, it is worth remembering that you don’t have to spend a whole year in industry to get an idea of what the world of work might be like. Students on all of their MEng courses in Civil and Environmental Engineering spend two 10-week periods in industry during the summers between years 2-3 and 3-4.
