The number of different types of large, complex software-intensive systems - eg automatic flight-landing systems, hospital patient monitoring and control systems, etc - deployed within modern societies is increasing. It seems likely that society's need for such complex computer-based systems will continue to grow.
The BSc(Hons) Software Engineering degree, which has been established for many years, introduces you into the profession of software engineering by providing you with the skills and knowledge to develop such computer-based systems. The degree emphasises both the analytical skills required to understand the real-world context of computer-based systems, and the technical, social, and management skills required to develop them successfully. Technical skills include designing, writing, and testing programs.
The degree has the following aims and objectives:
As a graduate in software engineering, you can expect to be considered for any position requiring programming skills, for example, IT-related work in an insurance company or an airline. In addition, you can also expect to be considered for positions in software houses, eg Logica, which offer experience in developing a wide range of computer-based systems. Software engineers should expect to develop their careers in at least two possible directions - either technically or into team, project, or higher management.
English Language requirements: All students will have a recognised English Language qualification of at least GCSE grade C or an equivalent such as the British Council's International English Language Test (IELTS) grade 6.0.
