African Studies is a broad degree programme which combines arts and social science approaches. The Centre of West African Studies is a small, friendly community of undergraduates, postgraduates, visiting scholars and staff.
First year
You will explore a wide range of issues relating to the African subcontinent from different academic perspectives. In the first year you take six foundation modules in the Centre, to introduce you to the history, cultures, environments, societies and contemporary political situations of Africa. All students take Focus on Africa, which also gives you general and transferable skills.
Second year
In your second year you take Perspectives on Africa, which covers breaking news stories on Africa and provides dissertation preparation. You also choose five other modules.
Third year
In your third year you write a dissertation. In addition you choose four other modules.
Teaching and assessment
Our courses are made up of a combination of mostly lectures and tutorials, but with occasional student workshops, debates and presentations. You will be expected to devote at least as much time to private study as to attending formal lectures and tutorials. There are unseen examinations in some modules.
Career opportunities
Many of our students have gone on to postgraduate work and others have found careers in education, the media, commerce, government and with development agencies in the UK and overseas.
Additional information
We organise an optional biennial fieldwork trip to Ghana for a month over the summer.
