From the analysis of North American film to the workings of Washington, the Vietnam War, the novel, slavery, the birth of jazz and the US in world affairs – this multidisciplinary degree explores the culture of the United States within the broad context of history, literature and society.
The core of these programmes is American history and literature, branching out into politics and cultural and film studies, and taking in Canadian Studies. Each element combines to give you an understanding and appreciation of North American life.
First year
You take a foundation course in American History and Literature up to 1890, together with an introduction to Canadian Studies. A group project module provides you with key research and IT skills. An ancillary subject such as Film Studies is also undertaken.
Second year
You study history and culture from 1890 to the present and develop your own interests – be these political, sociological, literary or multicultural – by selecting specialist options from a list that includes The African-American Experience since 1776, Musicals, and The CIA and International History.
Third year
You spend the third year with one of our North American exchange partners, which currently include Pitzer College, University of Wyoming-Laramie; the University of Iowa; the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee; the University of Virginia; the University of Mississippi; McGill University, Montreal; Dalhousie University, Halifax; or the University of Toronto. While abroad you are free to study a wide range of American and Canadian civilisation courses and to research your dissertation, which is then completed in the final year of study back in Birmingham. This year abroad counts towards your final degree.
Final year
Your final-year courses are drawn from a wide range of options including Anti-Americanism, Multicultural Studies, Cross-cultural Themes in American and Canadian History, and Contemporary Literature and Film.Joint Honours combinations
You can take American and Canadian Studies as part of a Joint Honours combination, in which each subject makes up 50% of the course (see American and Canadian Studies Joint Honours BA).
Major/Minor combinations
You can also take American and Canadian Studies as a Major subject (making up two-thirds of the programme) in combination with a Minor subject (one-third of the programme).
Major/Minor combinations include:

  • American and Canadian Studies with Hispanic Studies (UCAS code: T7R4)
  • American and Canadian Studies with History of Art (UCAS code: T7V3)
  • American and Canadian Studies with African Studies (UCAS code: T7T5)
