This programme is designed for those who have career aspirations and/or academic interests in the fields of childhood and education. It combines the academic study of childhood and education with a practical focus on career development in related areas.
The academic elements of the programme explore the ways in which children and childhood have been, conceptualised, represented and treated. Drawing on a range of disciplines from across the social sciences including Psychology, Sociology, Philosophy and Social Policy, this programme will equip you with the analytical skills and conceptual frameworks that are necessary for a critical understanding of childhood and education.
This programme has also been designed to prepare you for professional careers relating to children and education. It includes a number of professional studies modules that, as well as giving you practical experience, will also allow you to develop the skills that are needed for postgraduate professional training in the fields of childhood and education.
First year
In this year you are introduced to key themes and approaches to the academic study of children and childhood. More practically, this year also helps you to develop the key transferable skills that are necessary for successful study in higher education, and a professional studies module helps you prepare for a placement in the second year. You choose a placement in an educational context, which provides you with the opportunity to focus on the theory–practice interface in a school, nursery or community setting.
Second and third years
In your second- and third-year modules you continue to develop the knowledge and analytical skills relevant to many careers related to children and education, whilst also gaining experience of working in a relevant professional environment. Option choices allow you to specialise in areas of particular interest, and your dissertation gives you the opportunity to design and implement a small-scale research project.
Career opportunities
This programme develops a range of skills and knowledge that make our graduates attractive to employers in the fields of childhood and education. These may include – after postgraduate training – teaching, educational psychology, play work and a range of additional occupations working with young people and their families.
