The International Graduate School of East Asian studies is focussed on the economic and social scientific study of the East Asian region, specifically Japan and China. The curriculum of the graduate school is aimed at developing both regional and comparative competencies of contemporary transformations of East Asian economies, politics and societies, including comparisons with other major regions of the world - especially Europe. A central aim of the International Graduate School of East Asian Studies is the promotion of research collaboration among contemporary scholars of China and Japan in East Asia and Europe. A second aim is the development of a post-disciplinary, problem-oriented and comparative approach to social, economic and cultural changes in the transition to knowledge-based societies in the East Asian region and Europe.
Doctoral scholars in the program will be enabled for both scientific and high-level policy-relevant careers in fields as diverse as the foreign service, international and economic development organisations, corporate research and development headquarters and university-based research.
