The Department of Hispanic Studies (which also includes Portuguese Studies) is the only Hispanic Studies department in the UK to offer modules in all of the Iberian languages: Castilian, Catalan, Galician, Portuguese and Basque Studies, as well as in the literatures and cultures of the Iberian Peninsula, Latin America and Lusophone Africa.

Research

Research activity in Hispanic Studies spans medieval to modern, embracing the history, literatures and cultures of Spain and its regions, Catalonia, Galicia, the Hispanic Caribbean and Spanish America, Portugal and Brazil, as well as the disciplines of Linguistics and Translation Studies.

The Department currently has two centres funded by external bodies:

  • The Xunta de Galicia supports the Centro de Estudos Galegos to promote the teaching of Galician in the Department, and provides small sums to support research activity in Galician Studies, including the publication of the Galician Review.
  • Since 2005 the Portuguese government has sponsored the Ctedra Gil Vicente, a research centre for Lusophone Studies within the Department. The centre funds conferences and training events organised or attended by academic staff, language instructors and postgraduate students. It also offers partial bursaries to fund postgraduate students.

Other significant topics and themes researched and taught in the Department include:

  • Centre, Periphery and Borderland Narratives
  • Crime Fiction
  • Representation and Identity
  • The Interface between History and Fiction
  • Visual Culture in the Spanish-speaking World

Work in these areas involves all the major genres: narrative, poetry, painting, theatre and film.
