MAIAS is an innovative postgraduate degree for research in English and American Studies, offered at the precise geographical centre of Europe. The degree programme is directed towards advanced scholarly competence. It enables in-depth and theoretically informed study of the literatures and cultures of the English-speaking world, and of linguistic phenomena of English in its varieties. A wide range of forms of cultural expression such as literature, film, theatre, music, and popular culture are thematised. The (inter)cultural construction of authors and their works is a relevant issue, as thematised in a research project under the auspices of the Modern Language Association of America. From various perspectives, this degree programme enables the analysis of complex issues in culture, literature and language. Students will demonstrate their competence towards the end of their studies in an independent and comprehensive thesis.
Graduates acquire advanced competence in analysing complex cultural issues concerning the English-speaking world, taking advantage of the Faculty's focal research areas. Thus graduates are prepared for vocational fields with a cultural orientation, as well as for a doctoral programme.
