The Department of Italian Studies at Birmingham has one of the largest holdings of Italian films on video and DVD in Britain and is home of the Leopardi Centre to promote the study and knowledge of Leopardi and his cultural context in the UK.

Current research topics

They normally expect about eight research students to be based in the Department at any one time.
Among the topics currently being worked on are:

  • The Italian reception of British Modernism
  • Modernism and the short story
  • The work of Stefano Benni
  • Orality in post-war Italian writing, fiction and film
