This degree offers you the opportunity to examine the theory and practice of physical education, sport and coaching across education and community boundaries. You will gain skills that will enable you to contribute positively to partnership enterprises within sport, leisure, coaching, education and community contexts.
You will study a range of topics including sport, coaching and leisure management, physical education and community studies, as well as increasing your knowledge, understanding and awareness of significant sport bodies such as the Sports Council, the Central Council for Physical Education, sports coach UK and the Youth Sport Trust.
In Physical Education you have the opportunity to examine, both practically and theoretically, the nature of physical education from Key Stage 1 to Key Stage 4. The degree also involves the study of physiology, psychology, sociology and coaching, which have traditionally offered insights into the development and interaction of young people in sport, PE and community contexts.
The Community Studies element of the degree enables you to explore the use of sport and leisure activities as a base for informal education programmes. There is also a research placement module within the degree programme which allows you to choose a placement in an educational, leisure or sport setting. This affords you the opportunity to focus on the theory–practice interface in an applied context.
First year
Second year
Students are required to undertake individual research projects through a field placement within a sport, leisure or PE context. The research placement takes place during the second year of study and there is an expectation that students spend 30 hours within their placement. Each student is expected to negotiate their own placement.
Third year
Teaching and assessment
Assessment involves both practical and theoretical assignments, group and individual presentations and examinations. In the final year students complete a dissertation that focuses upon a topic covered within the degree programme.
