The BIGS-DR course programme consists of a set of intensive, tailor-made block courses. The courses provide students with interdisciplinary skills and disciplinary knowledge and tools to ensure that their research has a development focus. The courses include the classical fields of environmental disciplines within natural sciences, and the economic, political, and social-cultural dimensions of development. They are offered in three modules, divided into periods of one to three months.
During the first 6-12 months of residence in Bonn, in addition to the coursework, the students are also expected to work with their tutor and supervising professor on fine-tuning their proposals, working out the necessary budgets, and organising the infrastructure as well as the host-country and institutional arrangements of their field research. The field research proposal is presented to the scholars in Bonn and the relevant faculty for comments and suggestions before clearance is given to travel abroad.
ZEF's doctoral research is closely aligned with ZEF's three core areas programmes, economic resources, ecological resources, and political and cultural resources, or ZEF's crosscutting research themes (http://www.zef.de ).
