About the programme
The principal objective of the International Development Studies programme is to offer a high-quality, cohesive and balanced programme that examines the theory, policy and current practice of development by combining in-depth academic research with professional relevance. It is designed to equip students with all the theoretical and practical knowledge and hands-on skills they need to conduct policy analysis and problem-oriented research in a creative, effective and integrated way.
Career Opportunities
The MSc programme in International Development Studies trains students for careers in governmental and non-profit organisations, as well as the private sector. All jobs where international experience and the ability to formulate policies are important. Following recent policy changes at national and international level, the number and size of organisations involved in international cooperation have increased considerably. Consequently, there is a growing need for professionals who are able to integrate elements from various disciplines into the analysis of complex development-related issues.
Entrance Requirements
Students with a university Bachelor’s degree:
Applicants who have
- a BA in Human Geography and Planning with a minor in Development Geography have direct access to the programme.
- a BA in Human Geography and planning without a minor in Development Geography and who graduate from Utrecht University College with a major in Social Sciences, including the full Geography track, also have direct access to the programme.
- a BA in Social Sciences, Economics, Management or Organisational Sciences with a minor in Development Geography have direct access to the programme.
- a BA in Social Sciences, Economics or International Economics without a minor in Development Geography or who have a comparable BA from abroad have to present a formal and detailed outline of their academic background. Based on this, together with a statement of motivation, the programme’s Admissions Board will assess the extent and nature of any deficiencies in the candidate’s academic background.
- a BA in an arts subject or law with a minor in Development Geography and subjects in methods and techniques have direct access to the programme.
English proficiency
All other applicants, including applicants who hold a Dutch HBO diploma (diploma of higher professional education), must provide proof of proficiency in English. To do so, you are required to take one of the following English language tests:
- IELTS, Academic Module. Minimum score: 6.5 overall band, at least 6 for writing. IELTS is the test preferred by Utrecht University.
- TOEFL, Internet based. Minimum score: 93. Institutional scores are not accepted. The TOEFL institution code for Utrecht University is 9062.
- Cambridge Certificates
- Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English at least a B grade.
- Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English at least a C grade.
