Land Economy draws on the disciplines of law, economics and finance in the analysis of the use, management and development of land, property and the environment, and the Department is a leading international centre of research in many of these areas. The study of land economy encompasses analysis of law, economics, finance and the environment within both the private and the public sectors.

With respect to the private sector, the study of economics, law and analytical methods relates to the questions of property investment, development, management and valuation in both urban and rural contexts. At the graduate level there tends to be a greater emphasis on the development of policy and legislation with the development of specialist skills in directed graduate programmes. Much of the research concerning the public sector within Land Economy focuses on the role of the state in seeking to influence resource allocation through the use of economic mechanisms, legislation and regulation in both developed and less developed countries. Thus the subject embraces a wide range of topics such as environmental law and economics, property real estate finance, regional economics and policy, housing policy and land use planning and rural resource management.
