Course Description

The Master of Science in Economics has a strong international emphasis and offers a wide range of specialisations ranging from theoretical to applied.

Students in the programme can choose between a degree programme in general economics or in a specialised field of economics. The following areas of specialisation are offered:

  • Macroeconomics
  • Microeconomics
  • History of Economic Theory and Methodology of Economics
  • Public Economics
  • Industrial Organisation
  • International Economics
  • Development Economics
  • Monetary Economics and Financial Institutions
  • International Financial Economics

Career prospects

Graduates of the Master's programme in Economics have excellent job prospects for positions as researchers and administrators in:

  • international organisations such as the IMF, World Bank, OECD, ECB and other European Community institutions;
  • ministries and government agencies (ministries of finance and economic affairs, economic forecasting agencies, competition authorities and central banks);
  • employer and employee organisations, consumer organisations and environmental organisations;
  • banks;
  • multinational corporations.

Entry requirements

Academic Bachelor degree

Applicants are expected to hold a Bachelor‘s or Master‘s degree in Economics, or to have taken economics as a major subject. Students are expected to have taken a course in econometrics or extended quantitative methods at the undergraduate or graduate level.

All students with a Bachelor of Science degree from the UvA in General Economics will automatically be admitted. Students with a similar degree from another university are eligible to apply for admission. English language proficiency

  • Minimum score TOEFL test: 95 (232 computer-based/580 paper-based test, reporting number 0398)
  • Minimum score IELTS-test: 6.5, at least 6 on each sub-score
  • Minimum score Cambridge International Examinations: A (FCE), A/B (CAE), B (CPE)

GRE

A GRE test is compulsory for all applicants to the programme in Economics. For detailed information about the GRE test please refer to the link below. In the following cases they also accept a GMAT test:

  • if you have already obtained a GMAT score
  • if in your country it is difficult to take the GRE test on a short notice (e.g. China, Taiwan)
