The Faculty of Economics was established at the beginning of the twentieth century on the initiative of Alfred Marshall. It has been prominent in the development of economic thought ever since.

The Faculty has one of the largest groups of research-active economists of any British university and the priority of the Faculty is to achieve and maintain international standards of research excellence. Research collaborations:

  • Research activity in the Faculty is a collaborative enterprise and research groupings tend to be fluid and informal, with links across disciplines and outside the University.
  • The Faculty collaborates with other departments in research projects and to provide interdisciplinary courses.
