Course details

The Ph.D. ("doctor of philosophy") is an advanced research degree offered by the Magdeburg Department of Management and Economics to those candidates who usually embark upon academic careers in universities in or outside Germany. Others tend to obtain appointments in international organisations.

The doctoral programme ensures that students acquire a profound knowledge of economic theory, econometric and computational methods as well as the structure of modern economies, before beginning their own research under faculty supervision.

Students, unless exceptionally well-qualified, start with Pre-Stage 1 in which they take graduate level courses in

Microeconomics,
Macroeconomics,
Mathematical economics,
Financial econometrics,
International trade,
Corporate finance.

In Pre-Stage 2, the students accomplish postgraduate coursework, primarily in macroeconomics and microeconomics. After the successful passing of the Ph.D. qualifying examinations the students commence working on the Ph.D. research topic, on their way to the envisaged Ph.D. degree.
