About the programme

The MSc in Multidisciplinary Economics gives you a unique qualification to work in economics at a high level. Across the course of two years, you will:

  • Receive training in economic research and analysis by top researchers at Utrecht School of Economics;
  • Gain a sound knowledge of quantitative methods, micro- and macroeconomics, finance and financial markets, international and public economics, labour economics and organisational economics;
  • Get involved in research projects at the Tjalling C. Koopmans Institute (TKI), the research institute of Utrecht University School of Economics, and pursue your own research interests;
  • Explore economics in relation to a secondary discipline (selected from history, geography, law or social sciences) and broaden your understanding of the impact that the institutional, historical and spatial dimensions of an economic problem can have.

Career Opportunities

The MSc in Multidisciplinary Economics is a comprehensive and versatile degree that will leave you well prepared for a range of different careers. As a Research Master’s degree, it provides good preparation for a PhD and content from the MSc often contributes towards a PhD programme, reducing the programme in length from four years to three. In previous years, graduates from this programme have gone on to study for a PhD at various universities. Equally, however, this MSc provides a great starting point for a career in economics and finance.

Entrance requirements

The MSc programme in Multidisciplinary Economics is open to anyone who meets the following criteria:

  • A BA in Economics or in a related field. Applicants with a strong mathematical background are encouraged to apply, although it may be necessary to attend a preparatory course in economics.
  • A GPA of 3.4 or above (Dutch equivalent: 7.75 on a ten-point scale). Students with a GPA of 3.0-3.4 will also be considered for the MSc in Multidisciplinary Economics if they have a strong background in economics and additional experience in one of the programme’s related disciplines.
  • A minimum score of 80% on the quantitative section of the GRE General tests (Princeton Graduate Record Exam).
  • A good command of English. (For students taking the Test of English as a Foreign Language or TOEFL exam, this means a minimum of 100 on the internet-based test. For students taking the International English Language Testing System or IELTS exam, this means a minimum score of 7).
