Course description

This Distance Learning course is aimed at students who wish to gain specialized knowledge on severe and profound learning disabilities or other complex needs.  Many of their current students work in settings that support people with these disabilities. The course offers a theoretical framework, which is reinforced through consideration of practice related issues.

The course aims to promote strategies that enable individuals with learning disabilities to share the same rights, opportunities and choices as other people.  This is achieved by studying a range of subjects including:

  • Communication (including alternative and augmentative communication support);
  • Sensory loss and dysfunction;
  • Behaviour in the context of profound and complex disabilities;
  • Epilepsy;
  • Issues in education from infancy through to adulthood;
  • Leisure and Relationships;
  • Family issues;
  • Advocacy and Multi-disciplinary working.

Participants on this course typically wish to develop their career in a range of professional spheres, including Social Care, Healthcare and Educational disciplines.

The qualification is appropriate for developing specialist careers in educational, social care and health settings and can be a route onto professional postgraduate training.

Entry requirements

  • English language:
    • IELTS 7
    • TOEFL minimum score 550 (213 on computer-based test)
    • Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English C or above
  • A level: BBC- BCC in any relevant subject
  • AS level: Two accepted in the place of one A level
  • Unit grade information: The University of Manchester welcomes the provision of unit grade information which, like all other available information, will inform the consideration of applications.
  • GCSE: C in English
  • Key Skills qualification: The University warmly welcomes applications from students studying the Key Skills qualification.
  • International baccalaureate: 28-30 points with grade 5 or more in Higher level subjects
