Course description
The postgraduate diploma in Deaf Education provides training for qualified teachers who want to work within deaf education. It provides an evidence-based approach to meeting the diverse needs of deaf children.
The course places a strong emphasis on translation of theory to practice. The rapid developments in audiology, and their understanding of language, communication and educational practice, make this an exciting area of study. The course has DfES/TDA approval meeting the requirements of the mandatory qualification.
Module details
The course consists of relevant theoretical and practical teaching experience, is DfES-accredited and a TDA-recognised mandatory qualification for those who want to teach the deaf.
The following course units are studied:
- Audiological management (15 credits)
- Language acquisition (15 credits)
- Language assessment (15 credits)
- Developing deaf child (15 credits)
- Curricular access (15 credits)
- Policy and practice (15 credits)
- Teaching experience - 2x4 block placements (30 credits)
Career opportunities
There is a national shortage of Teachers of the Deaf. This situation is exacerbated by the age profile with over 50% of ToDs being over the age of 50.
Entry requirements
- All applicants must hold qualified teacher status or its equivalent. The course is also available to those who are qualified to work in further education.
- English language: Students whose first language is not English are required to hold IELTS 7.0, TOEFL 600 paper based or TOEFL 250 computer based.
