Course description
The course is aimed at well qualified graduates wishing to undertake postgraduate study of educational policy and practice. It has been designed for teachers and other education professionals working in a range of educational settings.
Special features
The course is strongly focused upon the application of educational theories, ideas and concepts to a range of school/college and community based contexts. It offers a unique combination of policy, practice and pedagogical based perspectives on education located within the educational and other related experiences of the participants. The aims of the programme are to:
- Develop participants' critical understanding of key concepts in educational theory in order to enable an informed analysis of educational practices
- Raise participants' awareness of the influence of context upon education
- Develop participants' professional knowledge, understanding and skills in relation to their prior and emerging professional interests
- To enable participants to gain evaluative and analytical skills that will help them to critique education policy and practice
- Develop participants' capacity to engage in research to inform and develop their practice
The course is taught by leading academics in education policy and practice. Course units include: Professional Studies in Education, Applying Educational Theory in Teaching and Learning Contexts, School Based Enquiry (Research Methods) and Contemporary Issues in Education. Optional study is also available in areas including Leading Educational Change, Psychology for Education and Inclusive Education.
Entry requirements
Candidates must be able to satisfy the general admissions criteria of the University and of the School:
- A good honours degree, or the overseas equivalent, in a related area.
- An initial qualification in teaching is also required if this is not formally part of your degree
- Students whose first language is not English required IELTS 7.0 with 7.0 in writing or TOEFL 600 paper based or 250 computer based, with 4.5 in Test of Written English
