This programme prepares you to become a classroom teacher of mathematics across the 11-18 age range. You study and learn about issues in mathematics education ranging from the theoretical, such as the psychology of how children learn mathematics, to the practical, such as lesson planning. At the core of the course is the development of good practice in becoming a classroom teacher of mathematics. Teachers and mentors in their partnership schools and colleges inform each component.
The PGCE Secondary Mathematics course consists of a variety of learning experiences designed for those wishing to train as teachers. The majority of the course focuses upon practical training in teaching and learning related skills. This practical training is underpinned by the development of participants knowledge and understanding of education theories, ideas and concepts and by enhancing their awareness of current educational issues and developments.
The Secondary course prepares graduates to teach the National Curriculum and related national strategies, GCSE, AS and A2 level. For the purposes of gaining Qualified Teacher Status, trainees may focus upon the 11-16 or 11-18 age range. Learning takes place through a number of school and university based elements. There are five periods of school/college experience: Introductory Primary Experience (2 weeks), School Experience 1 (7 weeks), School Experience 2 (7 weeks), School Experience 3 (7 weeks), Enhancement Experience (2 weeks).
Throughout the year you are kept fully informed about the most recent developments in mathematics education by a team of tutors involved in a number of nationally recognised curriculum development and research projects.
The programme content is essentially practical; approximately two-thirds of your time is spent in schools and colleges working with a trained mathematics mentor. In the university we employ a wide range of teaching methods and styles, ranging from formal teaching to student-led seminars and workshops.
All applicants require a strong academic record at A level or equivalent and at degree level including a Lower Second class honours degree or above in mathematics or a strongly mathematical subject such as engineering, physics or computer science. All applicants must also hold qualifications in English language and mathematics at GCSE grade C or above, or hold equivalent qualifications in these subjects. Students whose first language is not English require IELTS 6.0 or TOEFL 650 paper based or 280 computer based, with 4.5 in Test of Written English.
Previous teaching experience is not required but prior experience of working with young people in schools and other settings will be considered as part of the selection process. All applicants are strongly encouraged to spend some time (at least 2 days) in a secondary school or sixth form college prior to their interview. You will also be asked to complete an application to the CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) for enhanced disclosure. You will have to satisfy certain health requirements.
