The first year starts with a thorough introduction to the foundations of computer science and electrical engineering. The option of selecting courses from different specialisation areas in the second and third year allows students to tailor this major towards their specific needs and interests. In particular, it gives them the choice of concentrating more on computer science or on electrical engineering. This major includes a significant number of laboratory courses and allows for early participation in cutting-edge research in areas such as robotics, artificial intelligence, databases, system modelling, communications and, in particular, wireless communications, microelectronics, and electronic devices. Jacobs University emphasises an interdisciplinary perspective. This is reflected in numerous eligible courses from neighbouring majors in the sciences and in six mandatory courses from the humanities and social sciences.
