Electronic engineering represents the future of technology. It ranges from microelectronics, measured in atoms, to electrical installations supplying the world's largest cities. They are constantly using embedded or 'hidden' systems in their daily life. A new car will have no fewer than 50 embedded systems. The average home contains about 200 embedded computer systems. The Personal Computer is a computing system, but one with which they react through a keyboard, mouse and visual display. As users they can program the Personal Computer and direct it to perform a whole range of applications.
Each year of the programme requires you to complete a core set of modules with an expanding set of option modules as the programme advances. The wide choice of options allows you to gain knowledge in your potential field of electronics applications. There are two routes - the MEng degree and the BEng(Hons) degree. The former is a four year study programme (five in sandwich mode), the latter is a three year (or four in sandwich mode) study programme. You are encouraged to complete a one-year sandwich placement after your second year of study. The experiential learning usually improves your final year performance and subsequent career progression.
Demand for graduates with expertise in electronics is high and graduates are able to pursue careers as electronics designers for equipment manufacturers or in end-user companies. Recent graduates have found employment in a range of fields, including mobile communications, medical electronics and the aerospace and automotive industries.
Access: Achievement of the Access to HE Diploma (normally Access to Science); achievement of level 3 credits in Maths (to include algebra and calculus), achievement of level 2 credits in Maths and English Language. The Maths Unit at Level 3 must cover the core content for AS Maths.
