The use of sensors and electronic instrumentation is an essential element of all scientific and engineering activities and their use and sophistication continues to develop in service of that need. The driving force behind this is the ever-increasing need of scientific, industrial and medical communities for new and improved measurement techniques. It is further stimulated by the development of micro-processors, digital signal processing (DSP), fibre optics, novel sensors and transducers, and miniaturisation. This course reflects this trend and offers tuition and experience in the design, development and application of sensors and instrumentation along with supporting lecture and laboratory programmes on many aspects of sensors, electronics, signal processing, measurement and instrumentation. The programme offers a compulsory core as well as optional taught modules and a substantial individual research project. The Diploma programme offers a shorter review project in place of an MSc research project.
The course is run jointly by the School of Electrical & Electronic Engineering, the School of Computer Science and the School of Chemical Engineering and Analytical Science.
Students have successfully enhanced their general knowledge in electronic and electrical engineering by taking this course, enabling them to be specialists in sensors and instrumentation, or "converting" their original qualification as a means of enhancing their career prospects.
Academic entry qualification overview: The standard academic entry requirements for a masters course will be an upper second class UK honours degree, or international equivalent, in an electrical and electronic engineering discipline.
English language: Students will need to be able to demonstrate competency in the English language and students who do not already possess a recognised English Language qualification will need to take a test such as IELTS or TOEFL and attain a minimum of IELTS 6.5 (with no sub test < 5.5), TOEFL 570 with 5.0 in the TWE (Test of Written English) or CBTOEFL 230 with 5.0 in the TWE.
If you do not currently have an English Language qualification at the required level then it may be possible to arrange a pre-sessional course, the duration of which will depend on your current English language qualification.
