Satie was a colourful figure in the early 20th century Parisian avant-garde. He was a precursor to later artistic movements such as minimalism, repetitive music, and the Theatre of the Absurd. In addition to his music, Satie left a remarkable set of writings, including Le Piège de Méduse (1913) featuring music for prepared piano. This study day will include material on French cinema, lecture/recitals and a performance.
The day will feature a range of speakers including Professor Robert Orledge and Dr Caroline Potter. It is hosted by Gresham College in collaboration with the Institute of Musical Research, School of Advanced Study, University of London, and Kingston University.
