Course description

This is a 3 year programme that provides a broad background in all areas of Earth Sciences including courses on plate tectonics, the history of life on Earth, rocks and minerals, Earth resources and planetary geology.

A broad, general degree programme, covering all the major aspects of Earth Sciences - ideal if you want to keep your options open and are uncertain about your future career plans (whether in Earth Sciences or in general employment). Laboratory practical work and fieldwork are major components.

Career opportunities

Geologists find employment in the oil, mining, water and environmental areas, with site investigation being the growth area. Competent scientists, with analytical and numerical skills are sought after in many laboratory-based disciplines. Many of their graduates continue on to further degrees.

Entry requirements

• A level: Grades BBB. This should include at least one science. Two AS-levels are accepted in place of one A-level. General Studies is welcomed but not normally included as part of the standard offer.
• International baccalaureate: A minimum of 32 points with at least 16 at higher level and including two sciences at higher level.
• Scottish: Highers: AABBCC including two science subjects. Advanced Highers: ABC.
• GCSE: English Language, Mathematics and at least one science required at grades C or above.
• English language requirements: 6.5 in IELTS or equivalent English qualification.
