Course description

This is a 3 year programme that provides students with a broad background in Earth Sciences and specialist training in the environmental impact of geological and related activities. This programme is suited to students interested in exploration for Earth resources but concerned about the environmental impact.

This programme is ideal if you are particularly interested in exploration for Earth Resources and the environmental impact of their extraction, along with the safe disposal of any waste products.

The programme provides you with both a broad background in Earth Sciences and specialist knowledge about the environmental impact of geological and related activities. The programme includes substantial practical laboratory work and fieldwork in all three years.

Career opportunities

Geologists find employment in the oil, mining, water and environmental areas, with site investigation being the growth area. Competent scientists, with analytical and numerical skills are sought after in many laboratory-based disciplines. Many of the graduates continue on to further degrees.

Entry requirements

  • A level: Grades BBB which should include at least one science subject. Two AS-levels are accepted in place of one A-level. General Studies is welcomed but not normally included as part of the standard offer.
  • BTEC:
    • BTEC National Diploma (18 units) DDM
    • BTEC National Certificate (12 units) DM
    • BTEC National Award (6 units) D
  • Scottish: Highers: AABBCC including two science subjects. Advanced Highers: ABC.
  • International baccalaureate: A minimum of 32 points with at least 16 at higher level and including two sciences at higher level.
  • GCSE: English Language, Mathematics and at least one science required at grades C or above.
  • English language requirements: 6.5 or above in ILETS or equivalent English qualification.
