Geographical Information Systems and Science (UNIGIS): VU University Amsterdam

Educational requirements: BSc, BA, or other bachelor’s degree or equivalent (or MSc/MA). Applications individually examined (experience and qualifications).

Professional experience required: Recommended: 2 years working in the field of spatial information or related topics.
Language requirements: TOEFL (minimum score: 550/213)

Other requirements: Writing and analytical skills, normal computer literacy, affinity with IT. Student should have internet connection and a computer.

Objectives: The Postgraduate UNIGIS Course aims to provide students with an understanding of the technical, geographical and organisational aspects of GIS, linking the theory and practice with experiences from their working environment.

Subjects: General part of the course: introduction to GIS; spatial data, models and operations; database theory I; geodata sources. Specialisation part of the programme: there are 4 specialisation pathways: GIS, GIScience, GIS & Management, GIS & Environment. Specialization part is followed by the MSc. research and thesis. Total of 8 modules plus MSc reseach and two conferences at the VU in Amsterdam.

Modes of instruction: Core modes of instruction are: distance learning, modular framework, assessments, assignments, conference with workshops, and non-obligatory Winter & Summer GIS Schools (international Short courses).
