Course description

An Earth Science degree will provide you with a substantive, scientific training and the ability to communicate your ideas to other people. This training is provided in the context of understanding the processes that formed and subsequently shaped the Earth and how the resources that the Earth provides might be exploited in an efficient, and as far as possible, sustainable manner.

The data sets that earth scientists deal with are varied and obtained from the analyses of real, complex systems. These data are obtained both in the field and in the laboratory at scales typically ranging from microscopic to global.

This four-year MEarthSci programme is ideal if you have decided that you want a career in Earth Sciences and will be treating your degree as a major step towards a professional qualification. On this programme you can follow any of our pathways through the first three years (Geology, Environment & Resource Geology, Geochemistry) and you will also undertake a research project in an area of Earth Sciences that particularly interests you. There is a substantial practical and fieldwork component on this degree programme.

Career opportunities

MEarthSci students are particularly well-qualified to take advantage of the employment opportunities in the areas of mining, oil, water and the environment. Many MEarthSci students have continued their education by enrolling for PhD programmes.
