If studied on a full-time basis, the distance learning Master's programme is divided into two semester of basic courses, one semester of specialised courses and one semester for the Master's thesis.

Basic courses include:

  • Environmental studies
  • Chemistry and microbiology
  • Biotechnology
  • Geographical information systems
  • Hydraulics and hydrology
  • Water resources management
  • Sanitary engineering
  • Waste management
  • Ecological and economic interaction
  • Social effects
  • Law and management
  • Multi-objective optimisation techniques
  • Project assessment and decision making
  • Presentation and mediation techniques

Specialised courses can be chosen from one of the following main subjects:

  • Protection and sustainable water resources management of surface water (river management in catchment areas - quantity and quality)
  • Soil conservation, protection and sustainable management of ground water
  • Technical processes and methods in sanitary engineering and waste management (conditioning of drinking water, treatment of waste water and waste)

German or English language classes are an integral part of the programme.

In the final semester, students work on their Master's thesis which can be completed at the university, e.g. in combination with a research project, or in close collaboration with industry. Through a network of foreign partner universities students have the opportunity to spend a period of study abroad or to write their Master's thesis at a partner university.
