General information

In the Research Master in Regional Studies: Spaces and Places, Analysis and Intervention you combine a strong focus on research with knowledge of and interest in one of the core themes: economic geography, cultural geography, planning and demography. In addition, the Research Master is interdisciplinary, because it concentrates on the interactions between population, economy, regional culture and planning.

The specialisations aim at promising academics who want to specialize in the role of researcher in a variety of organisations. With its open structure, the programme provides ample opportunity for students to focus on themes of their special interest. It combines a solid training in research methods – both qualitative and quantitative - with a strong focus on participating in actual research.

Programme

The Research Master in Regional Studies offers a highly varied, two-year programme, in which students are trained to become independent researchers in their fields of interest within the discipline of the spatial sciences.

The programme offers four regions for specialization within the faculty of Spatial Sciences:

  • cultural dimensions
  • economic dimensions
  • demographic dimensions
  • planning and policy dimensions.

Career Prospects

Students with a Research Master Regional Studies may opt for careers in academic as well as non-academic institutes. The Research Master is an excellent choice if you have ambitions to do PhD research. You will learn a large number of research skills and acquire knowledge which is crucial for doing PhD research. It is also possible to anticipate your PhD in your Master Thesis. The Research Master is also very well suited to prepare for a job outside the university, where research or consultancy are important. The programme is aimed at training the analytical and critical skills of the students.
