Course description

The Degree of Master of Surgery (ChM) is a research degree undertaken by clinical graduates. The ChM is a higher doctorate level research degree proving competence in medicine, which implies a level of competence in research, and demonstrates a high level of continual professional attainment in the medical field. In particular the ChM is a research degree undertaken by clinical graduates, with a focus on the theory and/or practice of surgery and demonstrates a competence in human surgery. Candidates onto a ChM usually would be mid-career i.e. surgeons who are consultants in practice with sufficient surgical experience and applicants would normally not be below Membership Grade of the FRCS.

The degree of Master of Surgery (ChM) is awarded in recognition of the successful completion of this programme of research and training the results of which show convincing evidence of scholarship, the competence of the candidate to pursue research and a significant contribution to new knowledge and understanding in the theory/practice of surgery.

Entry requirements

Academic entry qualification overview:

Applicants for admission must hold an MBChB degree. Applicants from overseas who do not hold a primary medical degree from a university in the UK or Ireland, should enquire as to whether their medical qualification would be acceptable to the School.

English language:

Students whose first language is not English require a minimum of IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL 575 paper-based, 230 computer-based or 90 and above internet-based.
