Course description

The MSc in Interdisciplinary Medicine and Engineering (MIME) has been developed as a response to the increasing national demand for graduates equipped with the knowledge and skills to apply interdisciplinary medicine/engineering approaches to the development of novel therapies for healthcare. The aim is to investigate the clinical application of these converging disciplines for the benefit of society, healthcare and the economy.

MIME aims to equip medical students with knowledge of engineering practices that have the potential to advance medical practice; similarly engineering students explore medical problems which could be addressed through the innovative development of bioengineering technologies.

The MSc is research-driven, providing students with the opportunity to work alongside interdisciplinary experts, from clinicians and scientists to engineers and physicists, on novel cutting-edge projects. Course aims

MIME is designed to enable students to become an independent scientist, skilled in research techniques and principles relating to an interdisciplinary engineering and medical approach. Students work alongside academics of all levels and, depending on the research chosen, there is opportunity to network with an extensive group of eminent scientists, academics and clinicians within a chosen field.

Career opportunities

Students leave the course equipped for a number of career pathways, from further academic study (PhD) to public/private sector consultancy, industrial R&D or clinical medicine.

Entry requirements

Academic entry qualification overview:

There are two pathways to entry onto the MIME course:

• A minimum 2:1 honours degree (or equivalent) in engineering, biomedical sciences or natural sciences
• As an intercalating medical student. Satisfactory completion of years 1-4 of Medicine (MBChB) without failure of an examination required.

International candidates require an equivalent of a 2:1 degree in the above areas of study from a reputed university.

English language: Candidates whose first language is not English require a minimum of IELTS 6.5, TOEFL 575 paper-based or TOEFL 230 computer-based.
