Course details

This course is designed for HPC-registered biomedical scientists who wish to undertake part-time study towards a masters qualification in biomedical science. The programme draws upon Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS) Specialist Portfolios for the design of credit-rated modules in the professional disciplines of medical microbiology, histopathology, clinical chemistry or haematology and transfusion science. These are combined with modules in biomedical laboratory management and applied molecular biology and a laboratory-based research project to form a coherent and specialist discipline-centred part-time route for pathology service employees holding appropriate entry qualifications.

Career and progression opportunities

As the MSc contains both discipline-specific scientific and clinical content, plus core professional elements, it is a suitable part of training and development towards the role of a Health Care Scientist Band 7 practitioner. As this is an IBMS-accredited MSc, graduates could use the qualification to contribute to the requirements for eligibility to take the Higher Specialist Diploma, which prepares practitioners to take more senior roles in NHS Pathology departments.

Entry requirements

  • For non-native speakers of English: IELTS 6.0 overall, 6.0 in writing.
  • Degree and/or experience: Entrants normally required to have a BSc(Hons) Biomedical Sciences or similar subject area. Applicants must be HPC Registrant Biomedical Scientists and employed by a collaborating NHS Pathology Service Laboratory.
